9 Diwali Decoration Mistakes to Avoid (and What to Do Instead)

Most of them are small. All of them are avoidable.

Every Diwali, the same mistakes repeat in different homes. A mat bought too small. A string of lights that doesn't reach the socket. A lovely toran that clashes with the front door. None of it is serious, but all of it is annoying on the day you most want things to go smoothly.

Here are nine, with a fix for each. Read this before you shop, not after.

Plan the layout before you buy, and the mats will fit

1. Buying before measuring

The most common mistake. A mat that looked huge online can look small at your door, or too big for a narrow corridor. Fix: measure the floor and the wall first, and compare with the size on the product page.

2. Too many ideas, no focus

A mat, a backdrop, three torans, a lamp set and a table runner all competing. Fix: one focal point per area. See our Diwali Living Room Decoration Ideas for Apartments for a simple structure.

3. Decorating on Diwali morning

It is stressful, and the cleaning always takes longer than planned. Fix: decorate over the weekend before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Our Complete Diwali Decoration Checklist 2026 has a timeline.

4. Open flames near fabric

Curtains, torans, dupattas and diyas are a bad mix. Fix: use LED or water-activated lights near fabric, like the Haathi Deepam diyas, and keep real flames to the puja area. More in Water Activated Diyas: Safest Way to Light Diwali.

5. Forgetting the doorway

The doorway is the first thing guests see, yet many homes decorate inside and leave the door bare. Fix: add a toran and a threshold piece. Try the Gota Tikki Tassel Toran or Divine Bloom Toran. See Door Toran Ideas for Diwali 2026.

6. Ignoring where the mats will sit

Mats on a slippery or uneven floor move and look messy. Fix: lay them on a clean, dry, flat surface and check how they sit before guests arrive. Clean the floor first.

7. Clashing colours

A red toran, an orange backdrop and a pink mat can fight each other. Fix: choose one dominant colour and one accent, and repeat them. A marigold backdrop with a gold or red mat is an easy pairing.

8. Leaving gifts to the last minute

Gifts bought on the final weekend are rushed and limited by what is left. Fix: decide on gifts a week or two early. See Best Diwali Gifts Under Rs 2000.

9. Not planning storage

Decor bought without a storage plan ends up crumpled. Fix: fold or roll items when you take them down, and store them dry in a box or bag, so they come out ready next year.
