Lakshmi Puja Decoration at Home: The Setup She Walks Into
Chowki, charan, rangoli and diyas, arranged the way your grandmother would nod at.
Every Diwali, somewhere around the third week of October, the same quiet panic arrives. You have the sweets list, the guest list, the cleaning list. But the one corner that matters most, where Lakshmi Maa will actually be welcomed, is still a bare shelf and a vague idea.
Here's the good news: a beautiful Lakshmi Puja setup isn't about spending more. It's about arranging five things in the right order. And you have about three weeks. Dhanteras is Friday 6 November, Choti Diwali is Saturday 7 November, and Lakshmi Puja itself falls on Sunday 8 November.

Why Lakshmi Puja is really about the welcome
On Diwali evening the household does something quietly remarkable. We open the door, light the path, and leave the entrance clear, because the belief is that Lakshmi arrives only where she is welcomed. The decoration is not for the guests. It is the invitation itself.
That's why the footprints, the lamps at the threshold and the flowered floor are not optional trimmings. They are the point. Everything below follows that one idea: guide her in, then seat her well.
The 5-step Lakshmi Puja setup
Start at the threshold
Place a rangoli mat or cutwork threshold mat just outside the door, not inside. It marks the line she crosses. Our Golden Lotus Scroll Threshold Mat is one of the most loved for this, because the lotus is her own seat.
Lay the footprints inward
Sacred footprints pointing into the home are the oldest Diwali gesture there is. Use a Lakshmi Charan combo from door to mandir so the path leads straight to the puja space.
Prepare the seat
A raised, clean platform makes the whole puja feel intentional. A fur yarn Kalash Chowki Aasan gives the idol and the kalash a soft, stable base with a festive finish.
Frame the mandir
Dress the wall and the shelf around the idol. The Kamal Mandap lotus set builds a lotus frame in minutes, with no nails and no fresh flowers wilting by evening.
Light everything last
Lamps go on at Pradosh time, after sunset. Keep a small golden katori diya set for the puja thali, and let the rest of the home glow with water-activated diyas.
A small tip from real homes
Do a full dry run on Dhanteras evening. Place the chowki, the kalash, the mats and the thali once, then step back and look at it from the door. Whatever feels crowded or empty on 6 November is easy to fix. On 8 November, it is just stress.
Two looks, depending on your home
| The Classic Gold Mandir | The Lotus Garden | |
|---|---|---|
| Mood | Warm, traditional, brass and flame | Soft, serene, floral |
| Floor | Lakshmi Charan combo + cutwork mat | Golden Pookalam lotus mat |
| Backdrop | Kalash chowki with a draped dupatta | Kamal Mandap lotus set |
| Best for | Joint families, larger poojas | Apartments, smaller mandirs |
Don't forget the evening light
Open flames are beautiful and also the number one Diwali worry for anyone with kids, pets or a tight balcony. Many families now keep the main diya for the puja and let water-activated lamps do the rest. Pour in a little water and they glow, no oil and no flame. We wrote a full guide to them here: Water Activated Diyas: Safest Way to Light Diwali. The Haathi Deepam set of 12 and the Jal Jyoti Lakshmi Charan diyas are the two most popular at Craft Decor.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Lakshmi Puja in 2026?
Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Muhurat timings vary by city, so confirm the exact time for your location with your local panchang or priest.
Where should the Lakshmi footprints point?
Traditionally the footprints point into the home, as a sign of Lakshmi entering. Lay them from the door towards the mandir.
Do I need fresh flowers for the setup?
Fresh flowers are lovely for the puja itself, but rangoli mats and the lotus mandir set give you a lasting decor base so you only need a few fresh flowers on the day.
Can I set up before Dhanteras?
Yes. Most families set the floor and backdrop a day or two early, and place the kalash and idol on the day of the puja.
Are these safe for homes with kids and pets?
Water-activated diyas have no flame or oil, which many families prefer around children and pets. Always keep any real diya on a stable surface, away from fabric.
